The left created this moment

On Saturday, a would-be assassin came within inches of taking former President Donald Trump’s life. In many ways it is hard for me to fathom even writing this. I could not believe what I witnessed a day after I arrived in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention.
A local firefighter, a husband and father of two named Corey Comperatore died trying to protect his family, shielding them from incoming bullets that ultimately took his life. Two other bystanders were critically injured in the attempted presidential assassination.
This is the type of thing that happens in third world countries. It should not happen in the United States.
But here we are. In many ways, this should have been more predictable. This has been the build up from Democrats and their allies for the past eight years. They may have said somewhat kind words after the shooting—such as the shooting was “inappropriate.” They may have even expressed their agreement that there is no place in America for political violence. But no one who has been paying attention is shocked.
The goal of the left wasn’t and isn’t to defeat Trump at the ballot box. The goal has been to take him out. Last year, Democrat states tried to remove Trump from the ballot, something they had no legal right to do. They spent two years weaponizing our nation’s justice system to take him down. That didn’t impact voters who saw through the charade even as they watched our sitting president barely able to string a sentence together.
So the only logical conclusion was to ramp up the “Trump is a Hiltarian dictator who will destroy democracy” banter. Congressman Dan Goldman, who oversees the Secret Service as part of the Homeland Security Committee, stated in an interview on MSNBC that Trump “was destructive to our democracy” and “has to be eliminated.” President Joe Biden himself stated that it’s “time to put Trump in a bullseye.”
The night before the shooting, Biden tweeted “Americans want a president, not a dictator.” Every ally in the media and on social media understood their queue. The message is that Trump is worse than the most vile dictator we have known. If you preach that enough, you just might find one crazed individual who is going to take matters into their own hands. In fact, many might see taking out someone who is supposedly as vile as Hitler a morally righteous act. How could it be wrong to take out Hitler?
There are Americans who have been trained to believe we are only one election away from Trump-led authoritarian rule. Regardless of the fact that we have four years of a Trump presidency during which he neither ruled like a fascist nor sought to inflict harm on his opposition. And when he had exhausted every legal avenue to challenge the 2020 election, he packed up and moved out of the White House, just like every President before him.
We have now entered a troublesome era of accepted political violence from the left only, much like the violence of the leftist radicals of the 1960s. We’ve seen marches outside of the homes of Supreme Court justices and a planned assassination of Justice Brett Kavenaugh. We saw billions of dollars in damages following riots in 2020. This is not sustainable as a properly functioning nation. Debate Trump on his policies and ideas for our nation. Defend Biden’s record. That is a normal part of the political process. What the left is doing now isn’t.
For the record, the gunman is the only person responsible for the shooting. He did it. No one else. But the atmosphere created by Biden and his allies encouraged the moment.
We need healing as a nation. Because right now Trump isn’t safe. And neither are his supporters.
