We fixed it for you, Daily Journal

A recent front-page story in the Daily Journal profiled Gov. Tate Reeves’ recent appearances with Riley Gaines and Paula Scanlan. But they, naturally, did their best to make this something it wasn’t.

Under the headline image, it says the Reeves campaign will focus on one specific issue: “transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.” 

In reality, Reeves’ campaign, and many others, are focusing on something larger: the need to protect women. What does that look like? It protects women’s bathrooms, locker rooms, sorority houses, dormitories, rape and abuse shelters, prisons, and other same-sex spaces. This is the basis for the Women’s Bill of Rights, which simply says that a woman is a woman. Sadly, such a need is urgent and real, even in Mississippi.

In 2021, the legislature adopted the Fairness Act, which prevented boys and men from competing in girls’ and women’s sports in our state. So the issue that the Daily Journal thinks they’re writing about isn’t even an issue anymore.

The issue is what we will do to protect the 1.5 million women in this state. Saving women’s sports was a good thing. But we know we must go a step further.

I’m thankful for the time Riley and Paula spent in Mississippi and the important and needed work they are doing here and throughout the country.
